7 Ways To Beat The Winter Blues Naturally

Winter. It sucks. With the cold temperatures, snow and gray skies, it’s easy to see why lots of people suffer from a major case of the Winter Blues. Myself included.

But there are some ways to conquer these blah feelings! I’ve compiled a list of seven of my personal tried and true methods to beat the winter blues.

1. Crystals

Crystals are great to help uplift your mood. They work both as a form of color therapy and their energy frequencies can help boost your mood. You can meditate with the crystals, carry them with you, set them around your home where you can see them. So many ways to use them.  Some of the best crystals for the winter blues are:

  • Orange calcite
  • Citrine
  • Carnelian
  • Red jasper
  • Selenite
  • Sunstone

Want to learn even more about using crystals? Check out this online certification course!

2. Essential Oils

Essential oils are a must have for your arsenal of winter blues busting tools. Really, essential oils should be in your arsenal for life in general. Essential oils are some of the best and easiest ways to boost your mood. Put some in a diffuser, apply some topically or even smell it straight from the bottle.

Some of my favorites are:

  • Grapefruit
  • Bergamot
  • Lemon
  • Frankincense
  • Citrus Bliss from dōTERRA
  • Elevation from dōTERRA

3. Lights and lamps

There are two types of lights for this category. The first would be a Light Box Therapy Light. These lights are supposed to mimic the suns natural light. Our bodies need sunlight to function properly. Part of the reason so many people feel down in the winter is due to the lack of sun. These lights help boost your vitamin D and other good stuff. You can find these lamps at stores like Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, etc. Make sure you’re getting a light therapy light though, otherwise it may not actually do much for you.

Another type of light to get is a Himalayan Salt Lamp. These are excellent for so many things. They emit negative ions into the air. Negative ions are responsible for the “feel good” energy around us. Negative ions are found naturally in places like the woods, beach, waterfalls. These salt lamps are a great way to boost these ions in your living space. These lights can be found on Amazon, Home Depot, etc.

4. Exercise

When it’s cold and disgusting outside, we tend to hole up inside. Snuggled on the couch and staying warm and cozy. This also means that we are probably a lot less active than we are in the warmer months. Making sure to include some form of regular exercise into your day can really help you beat the blues. Exercise and body movement help to release endorphins and make you feel great. Try some easy indoor exercise like yoga. Even doing some sets of planks and crunches each day can be beneficial.

5. Diet

There are lots of holidays and festivities within the winter months. Which usually means lots of food and eating. It’s easy to consume lots of sugary and fried foods this time of year. It’s ok to indulge in some goodness every once in awhile. But try to increase the good foods. Make sure you’re getting enough fruits and veggies in your diet each day. Even increasing your intake of fruits and veggies can be helpful.

6. Outside

Ugh. I know. It’s COLD outside. But getting outside frequently, even when it’s cold, is really good for you. If you can, try to get outside for 10-15 minutes at least. Especially on sunny days. You’ll get the benefit of the sun plus the fresh air. Both of which can really boost your mood. Combining number 4 (exercise) with the outdoors is even better! Go for a short walk each day if you can.

7. Meditation

Having a regular meditation practice is really great for your whole being. Especially during these winter months. Meditation helps to decrease your stress, tension and anxiety and in turn will help boost your mood.

Want to really kick the winter blues away? Go nuts and combine as many of these suggestions as you can!

Go for a short walk outside then come in and meditate. Make sure you have your salt lamp and light box on, with some oils in the diffuser and crystals in your hand. Once done meditating, make sure to refuel with a healthy snack. Woohoo!

What are your favorite ways to combat the winter blues?

Many blessings!

Healing Benefits of Turmeric

  • Turmeric, the spice that gives curry it’s yellow color, isn’t just to make your food taste yummy. It has major health benefits too! It’s been used for thousands of years not just for food but for its medicinal purposes as well.
  • The thing that makes turmeric so healing is a compound called curcumin. If taking turmeric as a supplement, make sure you get a supplement that includes turmeric root Curcuma longa as well as turmeric root extract.
  • It’s important to note that curcumin on its own doesn’t absorb very well into the bloodstream. Curcumin is fat soluble, so make sure to take the supplement with a meal in order to properly absorb it into your bloodstream. You can also take the supplement within a drink called Golden Milk. Black pepper also helps the body to properly absorb curcumin, so you could always take a black pepper supplement with it or even just swallow a couple black peppercorns.

Now, on to the (proven) health benefits of turmeric!

  • Natural anti-inflammatory. This makes it helpful in stopping pain associated with chronic inflammation conditions. Such as arthritis, migraines and endometriosis!
  • It’s an antioxidant. Helps the body fight against free radicals which cause all sorts of havoc to the body.
  • It’s been linked to improve brain function and lower risk of brain disease. It’s even been shown to help prevent Alzheimer’s as well as slow down the progression of the disease.
  • Can lower your risk of heart disease
  • Can help prevent and maybe even treat cancer! Studies have shown that curcumin can reduce the growth of cancer cells as well as inhibit the growth of tumors.
  • Prevent and treat depression! Studies performed showed curcumin helps with depression.

As you can see, there are TONS of amazing reasons to use turmeric!

I feel I should mention that I am not a medical doctor. Please consult a physician for any health concerns. All information I’ve provided have been through my research in various books and information found online.

Lemon and Orange Essential Oils

Let’s talk about lemons and oranges. Essential oil that is! These two oils are pretty amazing but are sometimes forgotten about for some reason. I’m going to share some magical, physical and practical ways to use these two lusciously vibrant oils.

Enfleurage Essential Oils

Citrus sinensis, Wild Orange

  • Physically this oil can aid with indigestion and coughs. Orange is a natural expectorant, which makes it good to help release that nasty phlegm. To use, simply diffuse this oil or use it as part of a hot compress on the chest.
  • This is a great oil to use for boosting confidence and self-esteem and creativity
  • Mentally this oil is very uplifting and can help when you’re feeling down. While its uplifting it also helps to soothe any tension or anger. Some people even like to keep some of this oil in the car to help with road rage.
  • Magickally this oil is good for purification and raising magickal energy. It has energy properties of the sun and fire.
  • One of my favorite ways to use this oil is to create Orange Sun Water. Set a mason jar of water out in the sun to absorb the Suns energy. Then add a few drops of the orange essential oil with the water into a spray bottle. You can then use this spray to purify your home or sacred space, infusing it with the masculine solar energy.

Citrus limonum, Lemon

  • Have dry brittle nails? Mix a couple drops of lemon essential oil with some coconut oil and run into your nails and cuticles each day.
  • Looking for a natural astringent? Mix lemon essential oil with milk. Apply with a cotton ball to your face in the morning and at night.
  • Mix a drop or two of lemon essential oil with a small cup of water to use as a chemical free mouthwash.
  • Stinky disposal? Drop some lemon essential oil into the drain.
  • Magickally, lemon essential oil embodies the properties of the moon and water. Similar to the Sun Orange Water above, you can create Lemon Moon Water. Put water in a mason jar with lid and let it sit out during the night, absorbing the moons energy. In the morning put the water and some drops of lemon essential oil into a spray bottle. You now have purification water infused with the feminine lunar energy and lemon. Great to purify or cleanse your home or sacred space.

These particular oils are from Enfleurage. Enfleurage is physically based in New York City but you can order all of their products online as well. Check out the lemon and orange farms that Enfleurage sourced from!
